I thoroughly agree with this article. I had a blood test done back in 1999 and my cholesterol count was 8.5. The doc reckoned it should be 4 (it's calculated differently in Australia from how you do it in the US). She slapped a packet of Lipitor onto the table and told me I should take them. 'How long for?' I asked. The rest of your life.' I think from the expression on my face she could deduce the 'Yeah, right!' left unspoken. I don't do tablets. I don't do doctors unless I'm going for a check-up, or in agony - which is rare I might add. 'Well, if you don't want to drop dead from a heart attack, you'd better take them', she said.
I came home and did my own research on the internet and found 'Cholesterol Myths' by Uffe Ravnskov. I read it all, including all the links, and decided that I was not going to take the tablets.
I was badgered about it every time I went to the doctor's after that, until I told them if they kept brow beating me I just wouldn't go anymore.
How can they decide that everyone's cholesterol level should be the same anyway? It's my opinion that many of the people taking statins are likely to be the ones suffering Alzheimer's further down the line.
Two years ago I managed to catch measles (at my age!) and my resting heart rate was higher than normal. I was sent for a heart ultra-sound to check if there was a problem. . . . . NOthing! No mechanical problem and NO plaque.
I am 64 years old and I eat saturated fat - butter, because I know where it comes from and how it's made. I have no aches and pains; very rarely do I catch things that are doing the rounds; have had (real) flu twice in my life and a cold, for me, lasts three days. I'm so glad I was not frightened into taking statins.
The drug companies have convinced everyone that their cholesterol level should be around 4 - which means that virtually everyone should be on drugs. What a gravy train!
I think doctors do a lot of frightening people. I have a rather cynical attitude to drug companies. They're still drug dealers, and it is in their interest to not to cure you but to keep you dependent, it's just that they have government approval.
